XACOBEO 2010: Holy Year

It was established that "Holy Compostelan Years" will be those years in which July 25, holiday honoring the martyrdom of Santiago, is a Sunday. These circumstances are met in the following calendar rhythm: 6, 11, 6, 5 years cyclically. (Additionally, variations in the cycle must be taken into account due to the years that should be leap years, but are not.)

The First Holy Compostelan year was celebrated in the year 1122. The Holy Year initiates after "opening of the Holy Door" ceremony, held in the afternoon on the 31st of December of the previous year.

From that moment on the door will remain open the entire 'Year' until the following December 31st when it will be closed again. During that period, millions of pilgrims…

The next holy year will be in year 2021. Until that date we will not get to live another HOLY YEAR. This year you can cross the Holy door, hug the Saint, and get the "Jubileo" which means you receive a Full Indulgence (the absolution from all guilt and sins).

In order to receive the full indulgence it is necessary to:

1) Visit Santiago's Cathedral, where the Tomb of Santiago 'el Mayor' lies. Traditionally, other customs are put into practice like hugging the Apostle Santiago, entering the Holy Door, etc.

2) Say a prayer (Lord's Prayer, the Creed, etc) and ask for the Pope's Intentions. It is recommended to assist the Holy Mass.

3) Receive the Penance and Comunion Sacraments.
